Jeff Mose - All About Annuities

When Jeff Mose earned his insurance license and became a financial advisor in 2002, some might have seen it as a somewhat radical career change. While studying mass communication at Townson State University, Jeff worked behind the scenes and as on-air talent for Maryland Public Television. From there, he moved to the executive offices as a fundraising developer. Returning to Maryland, Jeff worked as Development Director for Baltimore-based WJHU-FM, and his success there led him to similar positions with the Maryland Chapter of the American Lung Association and the historic ship, Pride of Baltimore II. 

Then, recognizing that the Internet was poised for explosive growth, Jeff used his skills to become the marketing and communications manager for start-up Aether Systems, one of the first software developers for web-based handheld devices to track financial data. In 1995, Jeff helped prepare the company for its Initial Public Offering (IPO) and contributed to its eventual growth into a $12.8 billion company. After leaving Aether, Jeff co-founded the data-security company KoolSpan, Inc., and helped oversee its growth until leaving to pursue his career in financial services. 

In 2009, Jeff opened his own company, adopting a unique business model geared primarily toward retirees and near-retirees and focusing on conservative financial strategies designed to provide reasonable growth, dependable lifelong income and protection from damaging losses.  Jeff has been quoted in USA Today and the Wall Street Journal, as well as featured on the cover of Senior Market Advisor.

Build Credit In Case of A Divorce

Divorce can be hard on your personal finances, particularly if you haven't established credit in your own name.

If you have no credit, or a thin credit file, getting credit when you need it, perhaps to rent a car, buy an airline ticket or shop online, could be challenging.

This happens more often to older women who weren't the primary income earners in their household while they were married, says Ronit Rogoszinski, a wealth adviser at Arch FinancialGroup in New York's Long Island.

"A lot of women just never got the Visa or MasterCard or American Express,"Rogoszinski says.

Separate while married

The best way to fix the problem is to avoid it by establishing separate credit while your marriage is still happy, says Rod Griffin, director of public education at the credit bureau Experian.

"Ideally, you maintain an individual account or 2 in your own name in the event that something unexpected happens," Griffin says.

That could be a divorce or some other financial calamity.

A small purchase every few months typically is enough to keep an account open and active.

In some states, new separate credit isn't an option for married couples because state law automatically deems new credit accounts established during the marriage to be jointly held. You'll have to check to see if that's the case in your state.

Splitting up

Another approach is to establish separate credit during the divorce, using the primary wage-earner's income and credit history to qualify, says Lili Vasileff, founder of Divorce and Money Matters, a divorce financial planning firm in Greenwich,Connecticut.

The 1st step is to obtain your own credit report. This report can help you find out:

·      Credit that's open in your name.

·      Debts you don't know about(if any).

·      Credit reporting errors that can be corrected.

It's also a good idea to find what points, airline miles and other perks are associated with various accounts. Vasileff says these are marital assets and can be subject to negotiation during the divorce.

The next step is to open a major credit card in your own name "as if everything is normal," Vasileff says. Then get a car loan, open a bank account, sign a rental agreement or take other actions to establish separate personal finances.

"These little,small steps are very key," Vasileff says. "Because then, by the time you're divorced, you're up and running and have things you can point to."

Some couples split up their credit accounts before they untie the knot.

This separation can be easier if your accounts have small balances and payments have been made on time, Griffin says. In those cases, creditors might be more willing to work with you to remove 1 spouse from an account.

Don't expect creditors to honor your agreements with your soon-to-be ex, however.

"A divorced ecree doesn't change the contract you have with the lender," Griffin says.

Over and onward

The other option is to establish your own credit after the divorce is finalized.

"In that situation, you're faced with the same kinds of challenges as anyone who is establishing credit for the first time," Griffin says.

You might need to start out with a joint account that you open with a co-signer or a secured credit card that requires a deposit.

A credit union or regional bank might be more willing to open a credit account for someone without much credit history, Rogoszinski suggests.

"I don't believe anything is hopeless," she says. "If the 1st bank turns you down or the 1st store doesn't offer credit to you, try another one."

One challenge for people who are recently divorced can be a lack of income to qualify for credit.

"The only income these individuals have to show is spousal support," Vasileff says."Spousal support generally (can't be used to qualify for) at least 6 to 12months, so these people are sort of out of luck for a gap in time,post-divorce."

If you rent your home, you can ask your landlord to report your positive payments to a credit bureau. That can help you establish credit as well, Griffin says.

It can take several months or longer to establish enough credit to generate a credit score. It's generally easier to start from 0 than to repair credit that has been trashed.

Take care

Once you've established credit, do whatever you can to nurture, build and protect it.

"Manage that credit card like it's gold," Rogoszinski says."Don't take on balances you can't pay because the interest alone could spiral you into a pit you don't want to be in. When you get the bill, review every entry (looking for) identity theft and fraud. Keep your receipts and make sure the receipts match the statement. And always, always, always, always make the payment on time."

Mike Burleigh - Don’t Count on Inheritances to Save Your Retirement

Expecting mom and dad to help fund your retirement by leaving you an inheritance? Don’t count on it.

That’s one of the messages behind a new survey by HSBC Holdings PLC, the London-based parent of HSBC Bank USA.

According to the survey, 23% of pre-retirees would ideally like to spend all of their savings and let their children fend for themselves. In contrast, a mere 9% say they want to save “as much money as possible to pass on to the next generation.”

What’s behind the 14-point gap between those who want to spend it all and those who want to give as much as possible to younger generations? Several things. Many worry that by giving money to their children they will “take away the drive of the next generation to succeed,” says Brian Schwartz, an HSBC wealth adviser. Still, others anticipate that due to improvements in longevity, they may spend much of their savings along the way.

For many, though, the “spend it all” mentality doesn’t necessarily equate to a desire to spend it all on themselves. Mr. Schwartz says many people in or approaching retirement are interested in or practicing a “new approach” to estate planning that emphasizes giving away some money to the next generation while they are still alive. For some, the appeal is that they will get to see their children and grandchildren enjoy and benefit from their largesse. For others, it’s a way of testing the impact an inheritance will have on their progeny — in order to make adjustments if necessary. Still, others want to give their money away while alive for tax reasons.

“There is already talk in Washington about reducing the estate tax exemption to the levels that were in effect in 2009,” says Mr. Schwartz. Currently, individuals can transfer $5.43 million tax-free at death. A return to 2009’s level would mean the limit would revert to $3.5 million. “People recognize that estate taxes may go up” in the future, making it more palatable to give assets away now, he says.

The survey of 1000 Americans — 21% of them retirees — was part of a global survey of 16,000 people in 15 countries.

While the new approach to inheritance makes a certain amount of sense, it nonetheless comes with risks. In particular, giving away money before death now can leave you at greater risk for not having enough in later life.

The best plan, financial advisers say, is for families to talk — if only to establish realistic expectations.

Not surprisingly, many families are loath to discuss these issues. Adult children, in particular, aren’t eager to ask their parents about inheritances for fear of coming across as greedy.

Still, the survey indicates that working Americans have high hopes for inheritances — perhaps too high, according to Mr. Schwartz. According to the survey, almost half expect to receive an inheritance. Among them, nearly 20% are banking on an inheritance to completely or largely fund their retirements, while half say they expect to receive enough to provide them with some support in their later years.

While some may have good reason for their expectations, many others are likely to find that they won’t be getting nearly as much as they had hoped, says Mr. Schwartz.

In an era of low interest rates, volatile financial markets, expanding longevity, and rising costs for health and long-term care, parents may find that they need every penny for themselves. Indeed, thanks to medical gains, a 65-year-old man has a 60% chance of living to age 80 and a 40% chance of reaching 85. For women, the odds are 71% and 53%, respectively. All of this has made the 85-and-over age bracket the fastest-growing segment of the population.
