Bill: We asked marketing strategist Hema Dey for some key ideas and strategies for business owners to think about when developing their marketing plan.
Hema: Marketing is like a war game, so you really need to understand the landscape of the people that you want to sell to, and who your competitors are. We always produce a functional marketing plan. Another thesis, which is three months worth of work, but something that you can actually go out and say, right, roughy, this is your target market, here are your threats, your competitors, and what you’re up against, and really measure what those gaps are to make sure that the sales model, and I know a lot of people see the word “sales” as a big taboo word, but a business cannot survive without sales and if you apply that right across even the professional service sector…if people can actually put a sales organization within their business, then I think they’ve got it right.

Lynn: I know most newer CEOs think of marketing as “the tactics”, it’s advertising, public relations, it’s social media, it’s an email marketing campaign, but for marketing strategy there are three pieces: research, foundation, and then tactics and campaigns. And those marketing tactics are what I just talked about, advertising, PR, et cetera. And they should come last after you’ve done the other work. So, taking a firm’s strategic plan for the next three to five years, with an exit strategy defined, and then looking at the business plan for the upcoming year, what goals and objectives do they have outlined for the business in order to achieve their strategic plans, we’re gonna develop a strategic marketing plan to help meet those goals and objectives, and the first step in that is research.

Kevin: Strong management is thinking about branding every day. Every decision, they run in through their "how does this effect our brand" filter. That's important, but most small businesses don't do that, not even thinking about it on an annual basis. If that's you, I think it's time to get serious right now. Bill: What's the benefit of having a social media campaign today, and how do you measure if it's successful? We asked expert Tim Templeton.
Tim: Just simply having the presence is successful in its own way, because you're getting that halo effect of being seen as being technologically savvy. So, just simply being part of the social media game is important in itself. The authenticity really comes from the communications of being able to create a dialogue with your customers, with your users. I do think that you want to try to, at least once a week, touch all of your main social media platforms, even if it's simply repurposing something that they've already seen, just saying, "I think this is great," and posting it. It's just shows people that you're still there, you're alive, you haven't abandoned the graveyard, so to speak, nobody does not have enough time for something as simple as that.

Kevin: Well, I go back to grand promise: a brand is not your logo, it’s not your name, it’s the promise you make and keep to your customers base. And so, you need to be thinking about, how I can I make that promise unique to my organization? The second thing I would be thinking about: a brand needs care & feeding, we need to be thinking about it, if not every day, then at least every week, or every month. Whenever you make a big decision, you should be asking yourself, how is this going this to effect our brand, how does this effect the promise that we’ve made to our customers? Is it going to take us off course, or is it going to focus us? And if it is going to take you off course, then you need to think long and hard about it. And then, I do want to say, that it is really worthwhile to brand your company. One study has shown that up to 68% of the value of the average US company is for the brand alone. You can see how much that’s gonna add to the value of your company, I mean that’s almost 70%.

Tim: I just had a friend ask me today, I don't really get Twitter, what is the value? And I said, you know, it's 2 things, it's self-promotion, or business promotion in his case, and it's research. So, if you want people to know who you are and what you're doing, you create content, you create blog content. You want people to see it, one of the best ways to get it out in front of people is to send out an announcement using Twitter. Likewise, if you're trying to find people in your ecosystem, your business, the analysts, the re-sellers, potential partners, you can find them by their activity on Twitter, you can interact with them, you can follow them, you can re-Tweet things that they're sending, and you can create a relationship that way, which is a lot easier than it used to be in the old days.

Database marketing, finding new ways to engage them…that could be with videos, they bought a widget from you, maybe they need parts for that, maybe they need to come in and bring it back and have you maintain it, you send little videos out that will help them remember to come back and see you, or remember to tell their Uncle John about you, or whatever. It’s really about content, it’s not about selling them something.
